Cloudback Adds Cross-Platform Restore Between GitHub and GitLab

When a Git platform goes down or an account becomes unreachable, a backup is only useful if it can be restored somewhere reachable. A backup locked to the source platform stops being a recovery tool the moment the source is the problem. Outages, account lockouts, regional disruptions, and ransomware on the source host all end the same way: the data is safe, but recovery needs a second target.

Cross-platform restore is now available on every Cloudback backup. Any GitHub backup archive can be restored into a GitLab project, and any GitLab backup can be restored into a GitHub repository. The backup stops being tied to the platform it came from, so recovery doesn't depend on the source host being reachable. The same restore path also covers planned migrations driven by acquisitions, platform consolidation, or data-residency moves, without separate export steps and manual scripting.

How bidirectional restore works

Cloudback restores in dependency order: repository clone with branches, tags, and LFS objects; labels and milestones; issues with comments; merge requests and pull requests with assignees, labels, and milestones; and boards with label-based columns. Fields that don't map cleanly between GitHub and GitLab are appended as formatted text inside the target object.

Backup archives are AES-256 encrypted with optional RSA Lockbox for customer-managed encryption keys, and Cloudback is SOC 2 Type II compliant. Audit logs record every restore event, which gives incident responders and compliance auditors an evidence trail for post-event reviews.

Trigger a restore to the other platform

In Cloudback, select the backup you want to restore and click Restore. Choose the target platform (GitHub or GitLab) and approve the wizard prompts that follow. Cross-platform restore works on any existing Cloudback backup.

A second restore target on every backup

Cross-platform restore is included on every Cloudback plan. Every existing GitHub or GitLab backup can now be restored to the other platform from your Cloudback dashboard.
